RALEIGH - The statewide winners of the N.C. Economics Challenge were first place winners at the South East Regional Competition in Atlanta on April 27. They will go on to compete in New York on May 16-18 at the Council for Economic Education/Goldman Sachs Foundation National Economics Challenge.  The four students, who attend the North Carolina School for Science and Math in Durham, competed with 64 other teams in the North Carolina preliminary round in March, and against five teams at the Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond, Charlotte Branch, on April 1 to be named state champions in the Adam Smith Division.  The students competed in Atlanta against students from 10 other states and were named South Eastern Regional Champions. On May 16, this group will compete in New York at the Council for Economic Education/Goldman Sachs Foundation National Economics Challenge for national bragging rights. “We are so proud of this group and what they’ve accomplished. We wish them the best of luck in New York and know that they will do a great job,” said Sandy Wheat, executive director of the N.C. Council on Economic Education.

The two state champion teams will then proceed to the Eastern US Regional Competition in Atlanta with a chance to compete in the Goldman Sachs Economics Challenge National finals in New York.

Congratulations to the 2009 Econ Challenge State Winners!

RALEIGH - During March 11-17, the North Carolina Council on Economic Education (NCCEE) held the online preliminary rounds of the Economics Challenge for high school students. Students compete in teams of 4 to demonstrate their understanding of economic and financial concepts.  They compete in one of two divisions: Adam Smith, for advanced economic students, and the David Ricardo Division, for students new to economics, business, or finance courses.

Statewide, 65 teams competed in this year’s competition, which was made possible by funding from the Goldman Sachs Foundation, the Council for Economic Education, the North Carolina Council on Economic Education, and the Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond, Charlotte Branch.  These student teams will be honored at one of three regional awards banquets held by the NCCEE in May.

“We are extremely proud of these student teams and their teachers and look forward to meeting each of them in May as we honor their achievement here in their home state. We hope to continue the tradition of sending at least one North Carolina team to the national finals,” said Sandy Wheat, Executive Director of the NCCEE.
