2011 Economics Challenge National Finalists

The North Carolina Council on Economic Education (NCCEE) is pleased to announce that the North Carolina School of Science and Math (NCSSM) from Durham is among the Six Finalists to compete in the 11th Annual National Economics Challenge. Four students from NCSSM emerge as finalists to compete in the 11th Annual National Economics Challenge on May 22 in New York City, sponsored by the Council for Economic Education.

The NCSSM competed against 22 high school teams in the National Semifinals to advance to the 2011 National Championship. The 11th Annual National Economics Challenge started with 1,200 teams in 32 states where these students earned the crown of North Carolina State Champions at the Richmond Federal Reserve Bank, Charlotte Branch on April 6, 2011.

Teams vying to win the national title are:

Choate Rosemary Hall, Wallingford, CT

Iolani School, Honolulu, HI

The Harker School, San Jose, CA

Mounds View Senior High School, Arden Hills, MN

North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics, Durham, NC

Phillips Academy, Andover, MA

The final competition will take place in NY City on May 22, 2011. The championship round will employ a "quiz bowl" format, as teams answer difficult questions on complex economic concepts and theories involving micro- and macroeconomics, international economics and current events. An undisclosed cash prize sum will be divided among the finalists.

CEE created the National Economics Challenge in 2000 to promote student interest in economics, reinforce classroom instruction, advance academics and school spirit and reward scholarship. The National Economics Challenge is one of several key initiatives in the CEE's "Campaign for Economic Literacy" which seeks to focus public attention on the importance of economic literacy and the need for a high-quality, standards-based economics curriculum in every state.
