HSBC Approves Funding HSBC agreed to provide $15,000 to promote economic education and personal financial literacy in North Carolina’s schools. NCCEE Hosts Regional Awards Banquets In May the NCCEE hosted three regional awards banquets to recognize excellence in economic education by NC teachers and students. Statewide winners from the Stock Market Game, the County Marketing Contest, and the Calendar Poster Contest all received award. InvestWrite® National Grand Champion Names Hayden Lineberger, a sixth grader from Winston-Salem received National recognition as the middle school national Grand Champion. Hayden received a laptop computer, trophy, trip to Disney World for his family, and a $10,000 scholarship. Hayden and his parents made a trip to New York to ring the closing bell at the NYSE. Bank of America Charitable Foundation Approves Funding B of A Foundation approves a $15,000 grant to provide the Financial Fitness for Life curriculum and related training sessions for NC educators. RBC Agrees to Sponsorship RBC Bank agrees to sponsor the County Marketing Contest for NC Middle School students. Raising Achievement/Closing Gaps Conference Mary Cuthbertson, middle school teacher from McClintock Middle School in Charlotte presented a session on using the Stock Market Game™ as a resource and ‘best practice’ for raising achievement levels in math and other content areas. Citi Foundation Approves Grants The Citi Foundation has approved grants providing three Financing Your Future workshops for NC educators. Participants will receive a complimentary copy of the high school personal financial literacy curriculum. NCEE/Goldman Sachs National Economics Challenge On March 10 and 11, the Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond, Charlotte Branch, hosted the North Carolina Economics Challenge. Students from Lenoir High School were named David Ricardo Division Champions while students from NC School of Science and Math were named Adam Smith Division Champions. Jump$tart Coalition Sandy Wheat, Executive Director of the NCCEE, was appointed to the Board of Directors of the North Carolina Jump$tart Coalition. Stock Market Game Workshops Announced A series of 10 Stock Market Game workshops will be held the last week of January and the first week of February. For more information concerning dates and times, click on the Workshops link in the left menu bar. State Board of Education Meeting The NCCEE and its Economic Educator of the Year, Dan Irwin, along with his lessons were highlighted at the January 2008 meeting of the State Board of Education. Economic Forecasts January 3, 2008--Matt Martin, NCCEE Board Member an economist at the Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond, Charlotte Branch, spoke at a series of regional economic forecasts across North Carolina. Stops included Raleigh, Greenville and Wilmington. The program was sponsored by RSM McGladrey. In December, 2007 the NCCEE was awarded two Excellence in Economic Education Grants. Through the two grants, the NCCEE will be able provide the Financing Your Future curriculum and the training that goes along with it to hundreds of North Carolina’s high school educators. Funding for the this program was made possible by the National Council on Economic Education through funding from the United States department of Education Office of Innovation and Improvement. Funding Approved In December the Wachovia Foundation presented a $15,000 contribution to the NCCEE in support of staff development and training for NC teachers focusing on economic education and personal financial literacy. NCCEE Board Meeting The NCCEE Board of Directors met on December 12, 2007 at the Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond, Charlotte Branch. During the meeting, 15 new board members were approved. New members were elected in an effort to have the board more closely represent the constituency it serves. New members include representatives from the Private Sector, including financial institutions, as well as the Public sector, including government and Public education. Economic Educator of the Year December 10, 2007, the NCCEE recognized innovative economic education practices by awarding $5000 to Mr. Dan Irwin of Phillip O. Berry Academy in the Charlotte/Mecklenburg school system. Two other teachers, Gene Kikolski of Wake County, and Marvine Myers of Davidson County were honored as finalists and also received cash awards. The ceremony was attended by representatives of the DPI, the NCCEE Board of Directors, Superintendent June Atkinson, Secretary of State Elaine Marshall, and Deputy Chief of Staff of the Office of the State Treasurer, Jennifer Cohen. Mr. David Weaver, President of the Triangle Region of BB&T, was there to congratulate teachers. Funding for the Economic Educator of the Year was made possible by BB&T. BB&T also agreed to continue the program for 2007-2008. HSBC Agrees to Matching Funds In November, 2007 HSBC agreed to provide matching funds for providing Financing Your Future curriculum and training to NC teacher and students. Merrill Lynch and the Stock Market Game Merrill Lynch Global Philanthropy and the North Carolina Merrill Lynch Complexes in Raleigh, Greensboro, and Charlotte, have once again agreed to providing funds in support of the Stock Market Game in North Carolina for the 2007-2008 school year. The generous contributions will provide funding for Stock Market Game teacher workshops, awards banquets, and SMG scholarship funds for students from underserved populations. FBLA Triad Region November 10 the NCCEE presented the Stock Market Game program to a group of teachers from the Triad Region of the Future Business Leaders of America. NCCTM Conference On October 11, the NCCEE was invited to present the Stock Market Game at the North Carolina Council on Teachers of Math statewide conference. Teachers were presented with complimentary copies of Math Behind the Market courtesy of McGraw Hill and the Foundation for Investor Education and the North Carolina Council on Economic Education. NCEE/NAEE/GATE Annual Conference Sandy Wheat, Beth Eckstein, and Adam Pilsbury attended the NCEE/NAEE/GATE Annual Conference October 3-6 in Denver. The annual conference provided opportunities for professional growth and sharing of best practices throughout the national network. NCDPI Social Studies Meetings The Social Studies Advisory Committee Meeting and Social Studies Supervisors Meetings were both attended by Sandy Wheat of the NCCEE on October 20 and 21. |
