The Fifth Annual Middle School County Marketing Contest Middle School students are encouraged to participate in the County Marketing Contest sponsored by the NCCEE. To enter the contest, teachers must complete the entry form and adhere the following list of rules. Good luck to all! *A great opportunity for CTE classes that are using the NC DPI technology modules!* Must be Postmarked no later than March 30, 2012 Rules · The NCCEE County Marketing Contest is a team activity. Teams must have 2 or 3 people. This is a change from past years, when this was an individual contest. · Students must choose a North Carolina county, or the teacher may assign a county. The county may be their home county, but is not required to be. · The students must create a PowerPoint presentation that persuades companies to relocate or expand to the named county. · Students should use presentation technology as best they can to communicate their message. More information about this is below. · Judges will use the following rubric: Persuasiveness, 10 points. Writing (punctuation, grammar etc.), 5 points. Quality of information, 5 points. Use of audio-visual technology, 5 points. · Students must include the following information: County Name County Seat County Population Major Industries Major Employers Median Income Why a company should locate in your county. Be persuasive! Other things that make the county distinct
Hint: The presentation should be like a sales-pitch, not a report. Again, be persuasive! Think about how you can use the required information to create a case for a company to move to your county. Hint: Double- and triple-check your spelling—presentations with these kinds of errors will be disqualified. · The contest is open to any middle school student in North Carolina. · Information must not be cut and pasted from web sites. · PowerPoint presentations must be no less than 5 and no more than 10 slides. · Presentations containing misspelled words will be disqualified. · PowerPoint presentations must be mailed on a CD-Rom or flash drive accompanied by the teacher entry form. Please include the student’s name and school directly on the CD-Rom. If a flash drive, affix some kind of tag, either on a key-ring, sticker, or some other way. · About audio-visual technology. PowerPoint itself is audio-visual technology, so if the presentation is well-organized and has some pictures, students will receive credit for this. However, they will receive more credit if they are also able to use technology to find creative ways to enhance their message. Technology should support their message, not distract from it. Therefore, students should think about how to use technology better, not how to use it more. · Teachers will act as preliminary judge. As such, we ask that teachers submit no more than 5 entries per class. We encourage a competition at the school level where local winners will receive recognition for their efforts. Please indicate on your entry form the total number of students participating at the classroom level, and the total number of presentations reviewed at the classroom level in addition to the actual entries being sent to NCCEE. · All Presentations must include a bibliography. · Mail CD-Rom or flash drive and entry forms to: NCCEE - County Marketing Contest 3825 Barrett Drive, Suite 103 - Raleigh, NC 27609 Awards and Recognition: 1st place team: $300 2nd place team: $150 3rd place team: $75 Additionally, the top three presentations will be presented to the county commissioner’s office of the county featured by the student presentations and will be posted to the NCCEE website.
